

Wilderness First Responder
The Wilderness First Responder Course is a complete advanced
medical training package developed for non-EMT's who are called upon
to provide medical care as a part of their work in remote areas. WFR
is taught using a straight forward, hands on approach and is
especially valuable for search and rescue personnel, fire/rescue
members, river guides, hunting and expedition guides, trip leaders,
law enforcement officers, backcountry rangers, outdoor instructors
and others who may need to provide emergency medical care in remote
areas. WFR emphasizes emergency medical care in the specialized
context of prolonged transport, severe environments and improvised
equipment. There are no prerequisites for admission to the
program.
Successful Completion of the 64 hour WFR program results in four
distinct certifications of training. These are:
- ETI-WFR Certification
- CPR from the American Heart Association
- DOT First Responder Certification
Curriculum for WFR includes:
PATIENT ASSESSMENT
- systems and techniques for prolonged transport
BODY SYSTEMS
- mechanism of illness and injury.
- anticipated problems during prolonged transport.
- modified treatment procedures for delayed or prolonged
transport.
MEDICAL/RESCUE GEAR
- litters and splints, principles/ techniques of
improvisation.
- oxygen, airways, and respiratory equipment in extreme
environments.
TRAUMA
- principles of injury and application for prolonged
transport.
- modified treatment technique for fractures and
dislocations.
- managing injured spines during prolonged transport in
difficult environments.
- wound management in prolonged transport.
ENVIRONMENTAL MEDICINE
- hypothermia and hyperthermia
- near- drowning
- frostbite and cold injuries
- altitude and diving medicine
- lightning injuries
- sun exposure
TOXINS
- snakebite, marine toxins, insect bites and stings, plants and
other common backcountry toxins.
BACKCOUNTRY MEDICINE
- management of common medical problems encountered in the
wilderness: sprains and strains, diarrhea, minor wounds,
infections, dental problems, headaches, etc.
- first aid kits designed for the backcountry.
- survival kits for the backcountry.
WILDERNESS RESCUE
- rescue operations
- steep angle evacuation
- personal preparedness
- principles of litter evacuation, packaging and
improvisation.
