The Wilderness EMT program is a 60 hour continuing education training package designed for EMT-B's, EMT-I's, and EMT-P's. The Wilderness EMT course is top of the line training that will enhance the skills EMT's have gained and better prepare them for dealing with patients in extended transport settings. Search and rescue personnel, rural ambulance squads, military medics, hunting and expedition guides, trip leaders, law enforcement officers, backcountry rangers, outdoor instructors and others will find great value in completing the WEMT program. Prerequisite for admission into the WEMT program is current certification at the EMT-Basic level or higher. WEMT emphasizes emergency medical care in the specialized context of prolonged transport, severe environments and improvised equipment. The training is fast moving and includes various hands-on simulations and reviews. The use and adaptation of ambulance equipment in remote environments is also taught. However, special emphasis is given to the use of improvised equipment. Successful completion of the WEMT program results in a Wilderness EMT certification from ETI. Other certifications may be available. CE credits are available from individual state EMT offices.
The curriculum for the WEMT is very similar to the WFR. The material is presented at a higher level and includes the adaptation of ambulance and advanced equipment for use in remote environments. Emphasis is also placed on rapid assessment and evacuation skills
